The Carbon Sequestration in Mangroves Project

Data repository for the carbon sequestration project in Mexico's Pacific coast

Data deposition note: This website contains the full dataset used in the analyses of the following paper:
Ezcurra, P., Ezcurra, E., Garcillán, P. P., Costa, M., and Aburto-Oropeza, O. 2016. Coastal landforms and accumulation of mangrove peat increase carbon sequestration and storage. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA (in press).

General description: This open-access database contains three sets of data. The first dataset contains the total percent carbon of each belowground sediment sample collected from four mangrove lagoons mangroves along the Pacific coast of Mexico. The second dataset contains the radiocarbon age of core samples collected in both Baja California, and mainland Mexico. Age was obtained using carbon-14 dating, and calibrated using University of Oxford’s OxCal program for pre-nuclear-testing sample dates, and CALIBomb for post-nuclear testing dates. The final dataset contains total percent carbon of samples in a more detailed analysis in the Gulf of California coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico.

1. Carbon content in mangrove sediments in four coastal lagoons of the Mexican Pacific

This database contains the carbon contents found in sediments below mangrove forests in four coastal lagoons of the Mexican Pacific coast: (1) Bahía Magdalena, Pacific coast of Baja California Sur, (2) Balandra, Gulf of California coast of Baja California Sur, (3) Marismas Nacionales, State of Nayarit, and (4) La Encrucijada, State of Chiapas. Samples were collected by Paula Ezcurra, Exequiel Ezcurra, and Pedro P. Garcillán. Samples and data form part of Paula Ezcurra's Honors Program project at the University of California Santa Barbara.

3. Carbon content in mangrove sediments in five Gulf of California sites

This database contains the carbon contents found in sediments below mangrove forests in five coastal coastal sites of the Gulf of California, around the Bay of La Paz and neighboring islands. Samples were collected by Matt Costa with field assistance of Paula Ezcurra. Both samples and data form part of Matt Costa's PhD project at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego.
